More about just off the highway

Yes, I really do believe that there is magic in the stories that live among us and even inside us. We have a deep need for the encouragement and healing that they provide. So, from the outset, I decided to find and tell them, as honestly and fairly as I am able.

I believe we are created to create. A few years ago, my main outlet for creative energy, my stand-up comedy, was frustrated by lockdowns and movement bans. I missed the unique South African people and landscape from which I draw inspiration. I regretted rushing past so many interesting-looking places on my way to yet another gig and I resolved to do things differently, to travel with more curiosity and respect in the future.

As restrictions eased, “Just off the Highway” was born. Tentatively at first, with the generous support and encouragement of my family, and soon with enthusiastic participation of a collaborator, Corné Engelbrecht. We learned as we went as we made. We still do.

What’s it all about? I invite you to come for a drive in my classic 1972 Toyota Corona. It’ll be like the old days. Not too fast… roll down the window… and browse the 50+ episodes (and counting) If you see any masterplan, please let me know. It’s escaped me so far!
What’ll I discover next? That depends on the strange serendipity of whatever story falls into my lap. I’ve learned to trust that the right people somehow appear and introduce me to another gem of a story. Often they react to my amazement by saying, “Oh, I thought everybody knew about that.”
But places change, people move on, and traces of the past vanish quicker than we realise. If you’ve got a memory, legend or anecdote to share, please scroll down and let me know. Tens of thousands of YouTube viewers might be fascinated.

As a child in England in the early 50s, I read a story of a flying boat journey from London to South Africa. I recall even now the thrill and romance I felt of the adventure, the luxury and exotic experiences of the passengers. Maybe it was that memory which kind of subconsciously stayed with me years later when I and my wife took our two young boys on a 747 to Jan Smuts airport in Jo’burg, where we lived for nearly 12 amazing years. Now, nearly 50 years later, I am back in SA for a while – so many changes from those exciting days, but the lure of Africa never really leaves one, once it is embedded in your heart.
