Hi Everybody,
As we plough through the winter months and getting up in the dark to go shoot in faraway dorpies gets harder and harder, here’s a quick summary of what’s been happening Just Off the Highway.
First and most wonderfully, the restoration of the faithful Toyota has been completed and she looks magnificent! Old Skool Customs did her proud. You can watch part 2 of the process on YouTube (Episode 60).

Taking these pics I was struck by the elegance of early 70’s design. Those curves are too human to have been done by modern technology. There’s a graceful movement, an elegance, that puts a smile on those who see her. Most enjoyable is seeing young people marvel at the stripped down, basic interior. Although, having done many long drives, my time traveller’s message to 1972 would be: “Cup holders.”
Then, the Warden NG Church episode has also been posted (Episode 61). My friend and generous Just Off the Highway supporter, Mike, came along on this road-trip. Here we are chatting to Ds Frans Steenkamp.
You’ll notice that the 2 out-of-towners are dressed in full winter gear, while the genuine Free-Stater is comfortable in shorts and golf shirt!

So what’s in the pipeline?
I’m chasing stories in Klerksdorp / Matlosana. Once again, the people we’ve met have been truly friendly and welcoming. We stopped off at the museum which was the old Klerksdorp jail. Luckily, they let us leave whenever we wanted to.

More details when all the footage is being edited.
